Synesthesia: The Ocarina of Light (SoL)
I feel like the ocarina is a pretty solarpunky instrument to learn. Portable, traditional, made of earth. You can buy one for not much money, or with some skill and patience (and probably a bit of practice), you can even make your own.
Famous because of the Legend of Zelda games it’s technically a kind of flute, but it has a more mellow, soothing sound. There are some variations in shape and size, but the basic design is the same – a hollow clay body with a series of holes to make different notes. The ocarina is also ancient, dating back over 12000 years – neolithic times. One of the oldest musical instruments ever discovered is an ocarina. Historically, they’ve been important to cultures in Mesoamerica and China.
The loveliest ocarinas I’ve seen though, are these gorgeous little things made by Songbird Ocarina. The Ocarina of Light illuminates while you play, giving different colours for different notes! I have a mighty need. Seriously.
(Also, if you’re thinking of learning how to play, the guy in the video above is David Erick Ramos. As well as music videos, he posts lessons and reviews of instruments to his YouTube channel.)
